15 May 2012 | 9:00 pmThe CTU is a bit like Chicken Little at the moment. On RNZ yesterday on minor changes to employment law… The Council of Trade Unions says the changes to industrial relations laws being considered are the worst attack on workers’ rights since the 1990s In fact the changes are very much around the margins, and fairly in-substantive. The Government should require unions to collect their own membership fees, rather than force employers to be unpaid fee collectors ofr them – then they really would have something to complain about. But the “worst attack since the… -
Carpet cleaner charged
15 May 2012 | 8:13 pmNZ Herald reports: A tradesman allegedly caught by TV3 cameras committing an indecent act at a customer’s home was granted name suppression when he appeared in court today. The carpet cleaner at the centre of a hidden camera sting by the Target consumer affairs show appeared in Manukau District Court this morning on charges of burglary and wilfully accessing a computer. He was bailed to reappear on June 6, TV3 reported. What is interesting is that he has been charged for what some might say are the less vile offences, yet there is no charge for masturbating on a woman’s underwear.

Budget 2012 – sticking to a plan that’s working
30 Apr 2012 | 7:39 pmPrime Minister John Key says this month’s Budget will show the Government is on track and sticking to its plan. In a pre-Budget speech in Wellington, Mr Key reiterated that the National-led Government’s responsible management of the books means an operating surplus is set to be posted in 2014/15. “This year will see another zero Budget as we chart a course back to surplus,” Mr Key said. “The Government will continue to spend in priority areas. This Budget will protect and grow areas of public spending that are important in delivering real results to New Zealanders.” “We’ll… -
Pre-Budget Speech to Business New Zealand
30 Apr 2012 | 7:39 pmLadies and Gentlemen. Good afternoon and thank you for coming to this pre-Budget speech. I want to thank Business New Zealand for hosting this event today. And I want to thank them for the very constructive role they play in representing New Zealand businesses and employers. Budget 2012 will show the Government is on track and sticking to its plan. As Bill English said in a speech a few days ago, we are set to post an operating surplus in 2014/15. We don’t have the final forecasts through from Treasury yet, but we have enough headroom now to be sure that there will be a surplus in that…

EEZ Bill makes risky deep-sea drilling E-Z
14 May 2012 | 11:46 pmToday the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Economic Effects) Bill (EEZ BILL) was reported back from the Local Government and Environment Select Committee. The bill regulates activities like drilling for oil and gas in the EEZ plugging a huge legislative and regulatory gap that the Greens have called for action on for years. It’s vital that New Zealand has sound environmental management of our oceans and we voted to send the Bill to select committee where we hoped to improve it, however it wasn’t to be. Ultimately the EEZ bill contains too many serious flaws and risks our… -

14 May 2012 | 2:34 amMore good news. Ireland has announced that no hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” for gas would take place in Ireland pending further “detailed scientific analysis and advice”. HTC One X: E.T. phone home
15 May 2012 | 9:51 pmAs I entered the second week of owning the HTC One X, I felt it was time to explore the communication side. After all, what good is a phone if it’s difficult to work out how to make a call?Dialling a number is as simple as hitting the phone icon, which brings up a nice large dial-pad and recent calls list. The call quality on the Telecom XT network is very clear and very rarely suffers from drop-outs or fading. If you begin to input a number that you’ve saved in your contacts list, the phone directory will recognise it and automatically start populating the rest… -

The bad news continued this week for NZ talent, with Sam Neil’s series Alcatraz also cut by its network after just one season. The Wellingtonista was invited along to check out the revitalised space and new menu, and what we found was very very good. In their own words: The site was once, many decades ago, a butcher’s shop and in the process of peeling back all the room’s many layers we found that shop’s original tiles and brick. They were incorporated in our design, and so the place is something of a palimpsest, with the old coming through to the new. The new Hummingbird has a… -

Capture: Eating Tim Tams with Tono and The Finance Company
14 May 2012 | 4:35 pmLast Friday night we went to see Tono and The Finance Company play the final night of their 'Up Here For Dancing' release tour at the intimate Lucha Lounge in Newmarket. The music was great, Tono's lyrics are wry, funny and perceptive, and the audience gave them a warm welcome. I have taken photos at Lucha Lounge before, and knew the light would be difficult. Armed with the fastest black and white film I could find (Ilford Delta 3200), and trying not to get in the way too much, I managed to get some photos, the band illuminated by not... -
Hard News: Disrupting the Television
14 May 2012 | 4:32 pmThis week on Media7, we're looking at the curious case of Fyx, the retail ISP launched last week by Maxnet with a new pricing model and -- this is what got everyone chattering -- a "global mode" whose purpose, although the company was wary of saying as much, was to let customers defeat region-blocking on offshore video-on-demand services. In effect, it opened up a world of film and television. Customers would be able to use (and where applicable, pay money for) Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and other services. A growing number of more sophisticated New Zealand users have already been... -
Hard News: Where do you get yours?
10 May 2012 | 6:53 pmAccording to Nielsen research that I can't be bothered digging up right now, you, dear Public Address reader, are notably confident about buying things online, relative to the general population. It's a fair bet that you're also pretty confident about where to get stuff that you're not actually buying too.I was nattering with Pete Darlington on Twitter yesterday about places to buy music -- yeah, buying music, that's how old we are -- and he said he'd been using Beatport for dance and reggae music. I tend to prefer the British-based Juno, despite is quirky interface, for the same... -
Hard News: " To prostitute yourself to media interests is not a good way to be"
10 May 2012 | 6:11 pmLast night's Media7 programme is online here -- and there's also a 20-minute extended interview with Bryan Gould. The programme is not entirely unsympathetic to its subject, Rupert Murdoch -- senior lecturer at Auckland University and former Herald editor Gavin Ellis noted the debt that everyone in newspapers owes Murdoch and speculated on what might befall Murdoch's papers if he was removed from command of his company. But Gould, formerly a senior member of the British Labour Party's shadow cabinet and a colleague of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, was scathing of Murdoch's influence on British…

10 May 2012 | 5:13 pmMistake No. 2 – Not Knowing Whether You’re Making or Losing Money Annual financial statements or accounts prepared once a year many months after your Balance Date are only really useful for working out your tax bills, yet for the majority of business owners this is the only financial information they see. Prior to the introduction of computers for all and accounting software it was too expensive for most businesses to prepare periodic management accounts since preparing the accounts manually from traditional hand-written books and records was too time-consuming. However nowadays good…

REMEMBERING 1942
10 May 2012 | 10:11 pmThe establishment of formal N.Z.-U.S. diplomatic relations and the arrival of American military forces in Aotearoa in 1942 were events of great historical significance that helped transform the region, but they were also very personal events that directly touched the lives of millions of people. My colleague Laura is a research whiz who has devoted a great deal of time and effort to giving our 70th anniversary celebrations this year the authentic, human context that they deserve. Since she’s the expert, I’ve asked Laura to talk today a bit about 1942. Take it away, Laura. LM: Thank you,… -

CELEBRATING HULA IN AOTEAROA
6 May 2012 | 1:19 amAs you know from a few of my prior posts, Hawai’i is one of my favorite places in the United States. In addition to the natural glories of a tropical paradise, Hawai’i has a rich history as well as vibrant indigenous cultural traditions. In my travels, I have noticed great similarities between Hawaiian and Maori customs and expressions, which is not surprisingly among Polynesian cousins. Last year we brought Hawaiian performers from Oahu’s Polynesian Cultural Center to Wellington and Auckland. The musicians, singers, and dancers visited Kiwi schools to demonstrate and… -
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2012
3 May 2012 | 12:43 amLast year at this time, I wrote about both the promise of and the peril to a free press. Throughout the Middle East and North Africa journalists, bloggers, filmmakers, and pundits were chronicling the protests sweeping across the region, while citizens armed with nothing but cell phones risked their lives to upload the truth by text, tweet, and pixel. It was a powerful reminder of the role – and the responsibility — that the media has in keeping societies vibrant, energetic, and healthy. In recognition of that calling and the events of last year, one theme of this year’s World… -

Considered Conservation versus the Green Extreme
3 May 2012 | 7:10 pmThere have been times when factions of the conservation movement have been dismissed as too rabid to be taken seriously and at times that extremism ends in a situation being worse than it would otherwise have been.
