  • ASB pushes up the term deposit boundaries

    David Chaston
    6 Nov 2009 | 1:27 pm
ASB has today announced new longer-term deposit rates that will have investors needing high yield taking notice. Their two year rate has risen +0.40% to 5.40%, their three year rate has risen +0.60% to 6.10%, and their five year rate has risen +0.35% to 6.85%. These new rates are for term deposits of $10,000 or more, with standard interest-payment/accrual options. At this level, ASB has the highest rates for these terms for any bank in New Zealand. In fact, they have trumped every credit union and building society as well. Further, these rises will also put the squeeze on a number of finance…
  • Guest Opinion: Show me the money (gold) so I can be my own Federal Reserve

    5 Nov 2009 | 8:59 pm
By Damien Smith Kiwis may be looking on in awe at the rise and fall of the Kiwi dollar and the global stock market re-bound, but spare a little time for the rise of Gold. Gold as hit a record above US$1,095/oz. It’s back centre stage, re-monetising as the balance of economic power in the global financial system shifts to the East. Gold has de-coupled from the US dollar and is appreciating against all paper based currencies. The person on the street in New Zealand would probably never look at having Gold (the “hard asset”) in their portfolio for security to add to cash, shares and…
  • Opinion: How Neoliberalism has failed New Zealand

    Guest
    5 Nov 2009 | 8:13 pm
By Selwyn Pellett Neoliberalism has become so entrenched in the political and economic thinking of our country that we can no longer see the value in simply applying common sense to solve our economy’s problems. It seems that unless a solution can be couched in terms of Neoliberal economic theory then we dismiss it as having no merit. We have ticked all the boxes of accepted, mainstream Neoliberal theory, often long before others were willing to do so: deregulation, trade liberalisation, free flow of capital, selling off state assets, semi-privatisation of remaining state owned enterprises,…
  • Opinion: Why tax cuts would have been better than govt spending sprees

    5 Nov 2009 | 7:52 pm
By Neville Bennett According to CNBC, the “cash-for-clunkers” program cost the US tax payer US$24,000 per car. Still, along with the stimulus, it helped to convince many people that the US is out of recession. As a contrarian, I believe the GDP figures were horrible. Moreover, there are increasing doubts about the stimulus: recent research shows that a dollar spent does not create a dollar’s worth of activity, but only 60cents-80 cents worth. I suggest it would have been more cost -effective to grant an income-tax holiday. GDP Data Most media failed to explain that the US economy grew…

  • Do you know?

    David Farrar
    6 Nov 2009 | 8:30 pm
I’m interested in a little test here. The Dom Post reports: The identity of a top Kiwi entertainer who laughed after trying to force a teenager to perform a sex act will remain secret to protect his career. The man pleaded guilty in August in Auckland District Court to performing an indecent act likely to offend and appeared yesterday for sentencing. But Judge Eddie Paul discharged him without conviction and granted him permanent name suppression. He said the offending had been of a “medium to low-level” and he was unlikely to reoffend. Post in the comments below whether or…

    6 Nov 2009 | 7:54 pm
Around 30 hours after leaving Wellington I’m in Turkey. No photo as it is 5 am. Delighted that my hotel is allowing me to check in nine hours early, and withiout even charging me extra. That s what I call customer service. The Thai Airlines flight to Bangkok was12 hours, and went quickly. I had a row to myself so was very comfortable propped up in a corner, stretched out and reading a Robert Harris’ latest novel on Cicero, and the GI Joe movie. Had two to three hours in Bangkok Airport, and thank God for my Star Alliance status, I could use the Thai Royal Orchid Lounge, even…

As everyone else has done it, I’ve rated the Government’s first year in my weekly Dispatch from St Johhnysburg. Unlike others, I have rated policies, not Ministers. My ratings range from 4/10 to 9/10 with an average 7/10. Comments and feedback can be made at NBR. Tags: Dispatch from St Johnnysburg, NBR
  • A customer service fail for Air NZ

    David Farrar
    5 Nov 2009 | 4:42 pm
I’m a big fan of most of what Air NZ does. Their technology investment has been great (love my m-pass and e-pass), and I fly then when I can. I love their safety video (and one of the “stars” was working on my domestic flight today – poor girl – everyone talking to her about it). So I am not an Air NZ basher. But I couldn’t believe their customer service at the international terminal today. I got there at around 11.30 for a 3.30 flight to Thailand. I’m on Thai Air, but Air NZ do the checkins for them. Bad enough that at 11.30 they have not even…

  • What Would Rod Say?

    5 Nov 2009 | 8:33 pm
This first anniversary of the National-led government is also the fourth anniversary of the death of former Green Party Co-Leader, Rod Donald. With the many retrospectives being written about the “new” government, my thoughts turn today to what Rod might have thought about the developments of the last year. There’s been commentary claiming the government hasn’t actually done very much in its first year. Rodney’s embarrassment aside, it seems safe to say that Rod wouldn’t agree. First off is the long list of backward steps taken on environmental protection.
  • Access to Dental Care a Human Right

    Catherine Delahunty
    5 Nov 2009 | 6:56 pm
I am horrified that the Ministry of Health’s mobile dental clinics won’t be wheelchair accessible.  If the vision is to take health out to the people then access is a fundamental issue.  The excuse that a ramp would cost $70,000 must be examined.  What has happened to the DIY approach to practical problems like building a ramp?” The Green Party and Disabled Persons Assembly both refuse to believe you cannot buy or a build a suitable ramp for less than $70,000. In fact when I was working in the Auckland Green Party office we bought a mobile ramp for under $3000.   The Ministry…
  • Afghanistan’s Agony: What in the world to do?

    Kennedy Graham
    5 Nov 2009 | 3:25 pm
Afghanistan gets progressively worse.  The US President is caught in a vice-like grip between personal judgment and political constraint.  Having characterised Afghanistan as a war of necessity to escape a war of choice (Iraq), he cannot exit early.  Yet a late exit becomes a quagmire.  He thus equivocates over the military’s request for another surge, shedding political capital in a downward spiral of indecision.  No other NATO country has stomach for the future there, and certainly not Britain with five fewer soldiers this week.  The UN is reduced to a cipher that acknowledges…

    5 Nov 2009 | 3:10 pm
I’ve blogged before about the gap between what Steven Joyce wants for Auckland (more roads) and what the average Aucklander wants (more public transport). It’s nice to see the Herald agrees with me (for a change). They rate Joyce’s performance as a Minister 6 out of 10 – not because he isn’t an effective Minister – he clearly is. But because they think his policies ignore both the looming fuel crunch and the strong groundswell of support for public transport in Auckland among local government politicians and citizens. The disjunct between central…

So this week our Minister of Mining and Damming (aka Energy and Resources) let slip that the Mokihinui hydro-dam “would not go ahead”. Does he know something or was it just his ‘opinion’? Whatever the brain-burp was, he was ill-advised to say it when he has no direct decision-making power. However, it’d be nice to think that there may be Moki fans in Government – perhaps they are closet readers of the 1400-fan facebook page! The Wild Rivers campaign was stoked to hear it – they’ve only just launched and the Mokihinui is a prominent…

It was like a dream: I've decided that running an email server was not part of my business, and it was time to move this function out of my infrastructure into a hosted solution. I won't get into the fine calculations behind this decision (involving my time managing servers, cost of backups, server hardware, hard disk space, etc, etc.) since you can probably find a lot of experts (real ones and self-proclaimed ones) around to explain why it makes sense. The contenders on the first round were Google Apps Premiere (because I wanted Google Apps Sync for Outlook to keep using Microsoft Outlook)…

Wet and warm keeps the green stuff happy. The garden is growing like anything, something that most New Zealanders are undoubtedly accustomed to, but for me is a Being There experience that still amazes. Have had lovely, sweet strawberries for the last month or so, and green vegetables all throughout winter. The Italian flat-leaf parsley is huge, ditto the mint, holy basil, lemon grass, oregano, rocket, spring onions, sage and thyme - all the stuff that costs a small fortune in the supermarket. Having it fresh is just that much better as well. One of the best things to eat from the garden has…

As a child I can remember saying ‘See you in the morning,’ as I kissed my mother goodnight, to which she would often reply, ‘If God spares.’ This both puzzled and frightened me as I lay in bed wondering what the consequences would be if He didn’t or indeed who might He not spare during the night? I was reminded of this rather gloomy outlook on life recently when I read an article by Chris Rattue in the New Zealand Herald. In the aftermath of the All Whites’ away draw in Bahrain in the first leg of the football World Cup play-off, Rattue stressed how ‘the events of the game,…

Mainly drinking, but there’s no shame in that – some of the best wines in the country are there to be sampled, so it’s more like a patriotic duty. And wine is, of course, scientifically proven to be good for the heart – so put your heart into it. Despite the health benefits, there’s still a gruelling itinerary of 11 vineyards to get through before the day’s out. And in the baking sun of late November everyone’s knocking back the pinot just to fend off dehydration. No wonder the…

Acknowledged as New Zealand’s most accomplished poet, Baxter is also well-known for his wild lifestyle and the religious community he established on the banks of the Whanganui River. On 22 October 1972, he suffered a heart attack in an Auckland street and died, aged 46. He was buried at Jerusalem on Māori land, given a Māori tangi. It was 4 months ago that Google offered real estate search within their excellent mapping platform. Last week began what will likely become a steady and progressive expansion of the exposure of this service within more general Google searches - this is certainly going to be a beneficial move for the consumer. When initially released, to be able to search for property (sale or rent) on a Google map required a number of steps and a fair amount of investigative ability. It did almost seem like Google had in some way hidden this service away from the mass of the market. Were they doing a cautious…

The month of October tends to be one of the largest months for new listings. In October 2007 16,751 new listings came onto the market and a year ago as the market was reeling under the economic gloom 14,462 new listings came onto the market. These comparable figures give a perspective to the October 09 of 13,550 - somewhat subdued seems to summarise this market, a sentiment that has been in place for quite a few months with shortages of listings in some regions. The impact of subdued levels of new listings matched to recent sales which whilst significantly up on prior year still are well…

The two teams, Brutal Pagaent and Smash Malice are locked at one win apiece and this last bout looks to live up to the "Big One" billing. For those who don't know, Roller Derby is a women's sport where two teams race around a flat semi-oval track. It's almost like a mash-up of rugby and stock cars. The main thing is that YOU don't skate (which is the most commonly asked question). It's a fantastic spectator sport and the crowd is as much fun to watch as the sport (almost). Tomorrow is All Hallows Eve the night where the spirits of dead walk the earth. It's a time of ancient tradition and rememberence of those who have passed away. Samhain, however, is known to date back at least 2,000 years, based on analysis of a Celtic bronze calendar discovered in the 1890s in Coligny, France, in what was then called Gaul. The festival marked the end of the Celtic year, when the harvest was gathered and animals were rounded up. It's said the hides of cattle and other livestock slaughtered at this time were ritually worn during festivities that likely hark back to even…

Somethings are improbable but there is a big difference between improbable and impossible. I never thought I would be able to do something like ride a bike from one end of the country to the other, very improbable. So I broke it down, figured out what I needed to do, I came up with a plan and I did it. I took the improbable, removed as much of the risk and uncertainties as possible and boiled it down to a bunch of smaller things I could achieve: Ride a bike? check.
